Biomorphic Spine

Sterling Silver and Ash
Biomorphic Spine explores the direct connection between the human body and nature using jewelry language. What does it mean to connect jewelry to our bodies? Abstracting and combining fossil structures with the human spine, wearing this brooch reinforces the idea that humans are fundamentally connected to and are a part of nature. Wood serves as another symbol for this connection as it resembles bones when carved and sanded. I question humans’ similarities to nature in anatomy and form, to expose our relationship to one another. When one is feeling disconnected to life, the work inspires an appreciation for nature as a place for connection.
“Biomorphic Spine” was created through capturing hand-carved wooden forms on a sterling silver structure via pearl settings. Each metal structure mimics the shape of the wood it is connected to. The brooch is connected to the body via a pin stem.
